LUCY MILLER MURRAY, Founding Director
Founding Director of Market Square Concerts, has inspired the artistic excellence of the series for the past 26 years. Her commitment to new music and emerging artists balances Market Square Concerts presentation of great traditional repertoire and internationally acclaimed ensembles and soloists. Her chamber music associations, in addition to Market Square Concerts, include board membership of Chamber Music America, the Bard Music Festival, and Associated Chamber Music Players (ACMP).
Lucy Miller Murray is author of Adams to Zemlinsky: A Guide to Selected Chamber Music, published by Concert Artists Guild in 2005 and available at www.concertartists.org and www.amazon.com. She is regular program annotator for Fine Arts Quartet programs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Concertante Chamber Ensemble, IMG’s Tuscan Sun Festival, and the Great Lakes Chamber Festival. She has also written for the Ying Quartet, Trio Solisti, The Bard Festival, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Concert Artists Guild, the Russian American Youth Orchestra, Music at Gretna, and the chamber music programs of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. She has written liner notes for many recordings including the Ying Quartet’s 2007 Grammy-nominated Tchaikovsky CD, Maria Bachmann’s The Red Violin which has been named one of NPR’s/WGBH’s Ten Top CD’s of 2007, and the Lark Quartet’s Klap Ur Handz with works by Peter Schikele, Paul Moravec, George Gershwin, and Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR).
Her articles on music have been published in Chamber Music magazine, the national publication of Chamber Music America, in Philadelphia Music Makers, and in the American Music Center’s online publication, New Music Box. Her fiction has appeared in Prism International and Phase and received awards in 2004 and 2005 from WITF, Central Pennsylvania’s National Public Radio affiliate.
Lucy Miller Murray received a BA in English from Chestnut Hill College and an MS in Education with Distinguished Honors from Temple University, and holds a Certificate in Publishing Procedures from Radcliffe College. She was a member of the adjunct faculty in English at Harrisburg Area Community College. Her music education includes piano studies with Daniel Epstein of the Raphael Trio, Benjamin Whitten of West Chester University, and Stuart Malina, Music Director of the Harrisburg Symphony. She is a regular participant in the Raphael Trio Chamber Music Workshop and Lake Placid Chamber Music Workshop.
ELLEN HUGHES, Director
Ellen Hughes served as Assistant Director of Market Square Concerts in the 1980’s has been a board member of the organization for many years as well as an appreciator of and advocate for chamber music for as long as she can remember.
She grew up in Harrisburg and attended New York University before graduating with a BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Kent in England. She currently serves on the Kent in America board. She also received an MEd in Speech Pathology from Boston University and worked as a Speech Therapist in England in the 1970s.
Her long career as a classical music host and producer began with her association in 1980 with Harrisburg’s volunteer-operated station WMSP, where she served as host and program director. In 1990 she began working at WITF, Harrisburg’s public radio and television affiliate. She hosted cooking shows and other television programs, but the bulk of her time was with the radio station, announcing classical music and hosting and producing many interview programs. She welcomed over 800 castaways from around the world to talk about their favorite music on Desert Island Discs. She also founded and directed the Next Generation Festival, a WITF project that brought free chamber music each June for 10 years to Central Pennsylvania.
Hughes has narrated several works with area orchestras and given pre-concert lectures for Gretna Music and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. She has an interest in theatre and has appeared in local productions, most recently with the York Little Theatre in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. She is also a member of Harrisburg’s Gamut Theatre Improv group.
She is an active community volunteer and has served on many non-profit boards, funding panels and advisory committees. For four years she was president of MATA: Young Composers Now, a New York-based organization that supports and commissions music from young composers for an annual festival. She also serves on the board of the San Francisco-based Cypress Performing Artists Association. She has written on food and the arts for several local publications.
ALICIA MILLER, Development Director
Alicia Miller is a graduate of the Dickinson School of Law of Pennsylvania State University. She served as an associate in a general of practice for Miller & Associates, focusing on municipal law, small business representation, and trust and estate work. She also worked as assistant counsel and prosecuting attorney for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of State. Prior to legal practice she was employed as Assistant to the Director of Market Square Concerts and a Project Coordinator for Sondra Myers, Cultural Advisor to the Governor of Pennsylvania.
DARLENE RICHTER, Administrative Assistant
Darlene Richter, Administrative Assistant is responsible for payroll, benefits, bookkeeping, tax preparation, and box office duties. She also works for Precision Medical Devices and was formerly employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources.
MICHAEL RATHFON, Webmaster
Michael Rathfon's role at Market Square Concerts includes design and maintenance of the marketsquareconcerts.org website and also serves to ensure the organizations computer and technology related issues are operational.
